Dota 2: Save yourself

If you’re even slightly cognizant of gaming as a whole you’re at least aware of DOTA 2. If you’ve ever used Steam I’m sure you’ve seen it all over the front page. Plus it’s free! So is it worth it?

I mean, if that’s how you want to spend your time…
But let’s be serious here. The vast majority of my time with Dota 2, let’s say 75%, was against bots. Which I found to be a very enjoyable experience, for the most part. The rest of it was online, against other people… And I almost never enjoyed it. Too stressful. MOBAs are a rare confluence of high skill gameplay, low skill players, mandatory teamwork, trolling, foreigners, and rage.

It all comes together to form a mephitic brew. Sometimes it’s exceptionally fun, a high you’ll chase for hours. Other times it’s so bad you contemplate putting a .45 through the roof of your mouth.

Dota 2 has so many characters, all with different abilities and play styles. No two games are exactly the same. But in the end they all share the same arc; they’ll all blend together.

If you’re interested in Dota 2, the only thing it will cost you is time. And maybe your sanity.

Just know: You can only have so many Russians and Brazilians yelling at you in broken English before you wonder “Why am I wasting my time with this garbage?” – the true death knell of any game.

If you can get passed all the bullshit, there’s a wonderful game here. But there’s a lot of bullshit to get passed.
