RPGs and Reviewing Long-ass Games

Considering that I have undertaken the gargantuan, some might say foolhardy, task of reviewing every game in my Steam Library– on a semi-consistent basis. What am I going to do when it comes to long-ass games? Like Skyrim, the Witcher, or the various Japanese and traditional Computer RPGs I have collected over the years? Each game could easily have 50 to 60 hours of gameplay, and mainlining the story would definitely do a disservice to this particular genre.

Although it’s not the exact same situation, one of the reasons that I haven’t posted in a while is that I’ve been playing a TON of Path of Exile for my ARPG series. I started playing, and the next thing I knew I had put 72 hours into the game.

So it begs the question…

Should I play an RPG until I get a gist of the game and its mechanics then give my opinion on it?

Or should I play it to completion before speaking my mind?

The stories in these games are definitely the draw, as are the wild and varied stories that are made from the simple act of playing through them. If you’ve played Skyrim, I know for a fact you have plenty of hilarious stories to recount of the various dumb things you’ve done. Or stupid ways in which the AI has reacted to you.

These are intrinsic to video games as a whole, and RPG’s usually serious nature highlight them even more. So I think it behooves me to get the most out of each of game, before giving my opinion. But, should I only focus on the game as a whole, talk about how I feel about the various mechanics and story… with some personal experience thrown in? Or highlight all of the dumb things that happen to me while playing? It’s an interesting position to be in.

It’s not like any of these games are brand new, either. So my opinion although not invalidated, is “late to the party” so to speak.

How about a happy medium?

I think the best thing, at least for this genre, would be to have an “RPG Report” so to speak.
Not so much a review, but a running ‘chronicle’ of my adventures through the various RPGs in my Library.

I feel like it would be far more interesting to write, and to read, about the various decisions and encounters throughout Deus Ex. Than to play through the whole game and only briefly mention the cool, scary, dumb, or frustrating moments of my playthrough. How many times have you read a review of an RPG that contained the phrase, “At one point I…”?

It would also allow me to play through these longer games, and take breaks half way through instead of having to devote all of my time to them in order to beat them.

Just a thought, we’ll see how it all works out.

What do you think?
